Because his assignments involve valuable trade secrets, Jennings agrees to undergo a procedure that erases his memories of each project when the work is completed.
His latest contract is dramatically different. Billionaire technology executive James Rethrick offers Jennings an extraordinarily lucrative three-year assignment.
Jennings accepts and spends years working inside Rethrick’s secure facility.
When the assignment ends, Jennings undergoes the expected memory erasure.
However, when he returns, he discovers that he has apparently surrendered his enormous financial payment and voluntarily exchanged all of his personal belongings for a collection of seemingly worthless objects.
Instead of receiving the fortune he expected, he is left with a strange envelope containing 19 apparently insignificant items.
The FBI also begins pursuing him, claiming that he has been involved in a serious act of treason.
Jennings has no memory of what happened during the three years and must use the objects he unknowingly selected before the memory wipe to reconstruct his own past.
The Twist:
The central twist of Paycheck is that Jennings’ apparently worthless possessions were deliberately chosen by his future self.
Before allowing his memory to be erased, Jennings had used a technological system capable of predicting future events. He realized that his work would ultimately put him in danger and therefore arranged for himself to receive specific objects after the memory wipe.
Each object becomes a clue.
What initially appears to be a random collection of useless items is actually a carefully constructed survival plan created by Jennings himself.
The mystery therefore becomes a race between Jennings’ present self and the plan created by his forgotten past self.
The film’s central idea is that Jennings has effectively left instructions for himself without being able to remember writing them.

Legacy of Ben Affleck’s Film Career
Ben Affleck’s filmography is unusual because it contains several distinct careers within one.
He began as a young supporting actor, became an Oscar-winning screenwriter, developed into a major Hollywood leading man, experienced a difficult period in the early 2000s, and then successfully reinvented himself as a director and filmmaker.
His most important films can therefore be viewed in several different contexts.
As an actor, films such as Good Will Hunting, Hollywoodland, Gone Girl, The Accountant and The Way Back demonstrate his range across different types of characters.
As a screenwriter, Good Will Hunting remains his landmark achievement.
As a director, Gone Baby Gone, The Town, Argo, Live by Night and Air demonstrate a recurring interest in crime, American history, institutions, ambition and morally complicated characters.
As a producer, his credits demonstrate increasing involvement in the development and production of films beyond his own acting roles.
Affleck’s career also illustrates the changing nature of Hollywood stardom. He has moved from independent cinema to blockbuster filmmaking, from romantic comedy to superhero movies, and from acting in other directors’ films to controlling projects from behind the camera.
By 2026, his filmography encompasses more than three decades of cinema and includes acting, directing, writing and producing across a broad range of genres.
Ben Affleck’s movie career cannot be defined by a single genre or period.
He is simultaneously an Oscar-winning screenwriter, a major Hollywood actor, a Batman performer, a director of award-winning cinema, and a producer involved in a wide variety of projects.
From Dazed and Confused and Good Will Hunting in the 1990s to Armageddon, Pearl Harbor, Daredevil, Gone Girl, Batman v Superman, The Accountant, The Way Back, The Last Duel, Air, The Accountant 2, The Rip and Animals, his career has continually shifted between mainstream entertainment and filmmaker-driven projects.
Among his most significant career landmarks are Good Will Hunting, which launched him as a writer and actor; The Town, which established him as a serious director; Argo, which brought him major filmmaking honors; Gone Girl, which demonstrated his mature dramatic screen presence; and Air, which showcased his continuing ability to combine directing, acting and producing.
The result is one of the more varied filmographies of a major American actor of his generation.
